Reality Check Ahead

“I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.” I John 2:26-27 NKJV

It’s time for a reality check!

Have you noticed how many different “beliefs” are available for us to choose from? It’s like a virtual smorgasbord! Some are so deceivingly close to the real thing, that we are warned in Scripture to be on guard, and we are reminded the Holy Spirit abides in us to witness to the truth.

Scripture makes it very clear it is through God’s loving gift of His Son that salvation is possible; it is through Christ’s blood the price for salvation is paid, and it is through the witness of the Holy Spirit that we are made aware of the need for salvation. The Holy Spirit opens our spiritual eyes to truth.

The Holy Spirit (aka The Spirit of Truth—John 14:17a), is given to us when we are saved. Immediately, He comes to abide in us—The Spirit of Truth abiding in us! Paul states that fact very plainly in Ephesians 1:13: “And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit IS the anointing John is referring to in the opening Scripture.

I believe John is telling us we are equipped with what we need to recognize the deceit around us. We don’t need to be told by someone that a teaching is wrong. The Spirit will witness to us concerning false doctrines. God made provision so we wouldn’t have any room to say “I didn’t know…” when we stand before Him.

I know even when I can’t identify specifics, there are times in my life when I just know something is off; it’s not quite right. I believe that happens to all Christians. It is the Holy Spirit, abiding within, warning us there is “danger ahead Will Robinson!” (OK, maybe He doesn’t use the line from Lost in Space…) He’s witnessing to the truth that He knows and wants us to know, too.

This verse does not advise us to shy away from Christian counsel and “reasoning together.” It does tell us, however, that even without input, we will know the truth if we are listening to the“still small voice” that’s living within—Whose character is truth, itself.

Sometimes it’s good to perform a spiritual reality check. Have we allowed any deceitful beliefs to be assimilated into our Christian walk? Maybe we weren’t listening carefully, and something got by and has now become part of what we proclaim to be truth. Don’t we want to make sure we’ve got it right? Sure we do, so let’s ask the Truth Revealer to start revealing!

Reminder: The Holy Spirit, living within me, is THE TRUTH revealer
