new year's desire

“Take delight in the Lord,

and he will give you your heart’s desires.” Psalm 37:4

It's time to check our resolutions

What is it that drives us to embrace that annual new start and make resolutions? In a word, DESIRE!

Why does a "new start" sound so good... because we DESIRE to leave behind the things that have hindered us, or plagued us, or disappointed us, or... you get the picture.

Why do we make resolutions... because we DESIRE to be better: physically, mentally, spiritually, and any other "ally" you can think of.

There are desires within each of us, and as Christians, they are not meant to be an exception to the passage in 2 Corinthians 5:17 which states "old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." Our desires, which used to be all about us, have now become all about Him. The desires He has for us have now become the desires we have for us!

Isn't it awesome that we are told in the Scriptures that the plans He has for us (the desires he has for us) are ones to prosper, not harm, ones to give us hope for our future (ref. Jeremiah 29:11). I can hold to that, can't you?

There is a wonderful quote by Henry Ward Beecher in Proverbs from Plymouth Pulpit: "God plants no yearning in the human soul that he does not intend to satisfy." Rest assured, child of God, if it is truly a desire in your heart, He is not holding it like a carrot on a stick making your heart chase after something He never intends to give you!

As you contemplate the desires you have for the coming year, as you perhaps form them into resolutions and goals, don't forget to prayerfully consider what they should be. Don't let this be another year of broken resolutions and unreachable goals. Hold to the Word that says "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires."

He's not a Genie. He doesn't grant wishes. He aligns your heart with His and satisfies the yearnings He has placed within you for His purposes.

Have a wonderful, God-fulfilled year!
