sharing Jesus isn't seasonal

“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season;” 2 Timothy 4:2a

It’s time to tell it like it is!

Several years ago I wrote a children’s devotional for "Keys For Kids" using this verse. In the short story I wrote, a teacher handed out a surprise quiz in Sunday School. The children were confused when they realized it was a math quiz, not a “churchy” quiz. After being assured by the students that they could indeed do the math, the teacher explained to them that just like being able to do math anywhere, they could talk about Jesus anywhere, as well. if you know it-YOU KNOW IT! A simple story, yes, but one that made a point that we can’t miss.

There are times and places where it is very easy to talk about Jesus. It’s less stressful to talk openly with another person who shares our beliefs than it is to talk to someone who is opposed to them. If we aren’t careful, we can easily compartmentalize our lives so that we stay comfortable no matter what setting we are in. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

This verse is actually part of a charge that Paul gave to Timothy. Paul had great insight. When we read the verses immediately following this one, we should understand that Paul foresaw what is happening today, and knew it would be imperative that Christians continue to speak the truth in love, continue to witness whether comfortable or not.

Here is what Paul “prophesied” as stated in verses 3 & 4: “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” Would you agree that the time he was talking about is here?

We can’t let our nerves or discomfort dictate whether or not we share Jesus with those who need to know about Him. Jesus isn’t just for discussing in Church or Bible Study or with a Christian friend. We are to take Jesus into all areas of our lives, and whether it seems “convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome,” we are to talk about Him and try to “convince them” of the truth (quotes from the Amplified Bible).

Reminder: We are to talk about Jesus no matter where we are!
